Day 1 - Shams Via Ferrata
This is a world-class experience on top of the highest mountain in the region, Jebel Shams. Our adventure commences with a hike along the edge of the canyon, the famous Balcony Walk, to the recently abandoned village of Sap Bani Khamis. See what the local lifestyle was there, just mere 70 years ago and learn about Oman’s history and geology. Continue climbing up the scree to the start of the villagers’ old sticks stairway, now the Via Ferrata. The route is protected with a steel cable that reaches all the way up the 200m cliffs, providing assisted climbing for the adventurer with little experience. With the 2,000m deep canyon just over your shoulder, the views are exceptional and a head for heights is most definitely required.
Day 2 - Jebel Shams Summit Trek
We’ll get an early start as today is the longest trek of the whole week! It’s a grueling trail up, with many false summits, but don’t get disheartened! The incredible panoramic views from the summit are worth every step. You are on the top of Oman, and will be treated to views of the whole of the Western Hajar, with the Jebel Akhdar range rolling out in front of you.
Day 3 - Cultural Exploration
After breakfast in Jebel Shams Resort, we’ll drive down the mountain and explore the abandoned villages in Wadi Ghul. Spend the rest of the day as you choose, for example exploring the ruins at Tanuf, and visiting Bait al Safah, Oman’s ‘living museum’. Travel up to the green village of Misfat Al Abryeen, carved into the mountainside, and relax and enjoy the view!
Day 4 - Misfat Al Abryeen to Sharaf Al Amein
After breakfast we explore the mountain to the Oasis of Misfat Al Abryeen. This ‘Mountain Oasis’ has it all, agricultural terraces and gardens, traditional mud houses built on solid rock and ancient Falaj systems used for irrigation. As you walk through the old alleys, you gain a first-hand experience of the villagers’ lifestyle and explore the date plantations. We will explore the village before choosing one of two routes across to Sharaf Alamein. If your legs are up for the challenge, take the UTMB Route up to the highest point and follow the ridge line as it undulates across the skyline. For a slightly softer option, but still with amazing views, take the traditional route that cuts directly over to Sharaf Alamein, where you will find Al Hoota Rest House, our resting point for the night. Take the opportunity to watch the sunset – it’s one of our favourite locations!
Day 5 - Sharaf Al Amein to Jebel Akhdar
Today we’ll continue on our journey crossing the Western Hajar. This is a fantastic section of the UTMB route, that passes by the village of Qayoot as it traverses its way in between spectacular canyons. This section of the trail will bring alive to you the history of Jebel Akhdar, as you can see the evidence of the Jebel Akhdar War in the form of shrapnel scattered around the mountainsides. The trail ends near the Alila Jebel Akhdar; a real touch of luxury if you’d like to splash out for one night only. The Balinese spa cannot be recommended highly enough for weary muscles!
Day 6 - Jebel Akhdar Cultural Exploration
Today we’ll have an easy day. Opt to explore the Gardens of Jebel Akhdar on a shot trek, go to Nizwa to the traditional livestock market and souq, or explore the freshwater pools of Wadi Muyadin. We can leave this day flexible for you to decide with your guide.
Day 7 - Qashah Circuit Trek Day 1
Today is an early start to make sure that we have started the first 800m hike up the ridge before the sun hits the surface. It is a gruelling climb with about 30-40 degrees incline but very much worth it. After this, the day ahead levels off nicely and we continue to follow around the edge of Wadi Qashah gently climbing as we walk and enjoying the views of the impressive Jebel Akhdar mountain also known as Green Mountain. This area is stunning; it is rich in the recent history of Oman as well. Stopping for lunch in an abandoned village hidden under a rock ledge, we look out and take in the views. The route now continues up towards our camping area for the evening, an old helipad. It was once used for supply drops before the roads across the mountain were built. We enjoy a well-deserved dinner with a BBQ and enjoy one of the most beautiful starry skies, one can only see far away from the city lights.
Day 8 - Qashah Circuit Trek Day 1
Another early start and we head down the mountain from the other side to complete the Qashah Circuit. The views down into the canyon below and across the deep ravines are incredible. This is an easier day as we will be slowly descending along the way, yet the long distance means it will take us 6-8 hours to complete the route, with lunch on the way in a picturesque spot, amazing nature and fresh air you can only find up in the mountains. After the adventure, we head back to Muscat for a relaxing night at a hotel to recover before our next adventure.
