TRIP DETAILS

Day 1

This side of the canyon makes for a fantastic fun day out from Muscat for everyone from fresh canyoneers to seasoned veterans. On the 3km descent of the canyon you will use a variety of techniques to safely descend to the exit, everything from slides and jumps to swims and climbs. This canyon has something for everybody. For all of the canyoning adventures in Oman it is essential to get an early start, firstly to beat the heat of the midday sun but also minimise the chance of getting caught out in the afternoon showers. The journey from central Muscat takes a little under two hours to reach the canyon entrance so we leave Muscat at 6am. Want to avoid the early start? Add a night camping to your adventure and enjoy our fully set up camp and BBQ. You can also make a weekend out of it and bolt on another adventure like the Jebel Shams Via Ferrata or Al Hooti Cave the next day.

Day 2

Today, the real adventure begins with an early breakfast and a 2-hour drive to Wadi Bani Auf, one of the most picturesque canyons in the Western Hajar. Visit the traditional village of Bilad Sayt, with its terraced farms and date palm gardens, nested at the foothills of the mountains. Stop for Kahwa and dates at the local house and learn from the local people about their lifestyle and culture. After fuelling up with the local delicacies and stories we start our trek. The path leads us through the lush village and up towards the ridge, towering 1,000m above us. The trek is challenging and exposed, we follow what used to be a goat path, winding all the way up. The views are spectacular, the higher you climb the more opens up to you with a panoramic view of Wadi Bani Auf and beyond. The trek will take about 6 hours with a break for a picnic lunch along the way. On the ridge, we check-in at a local guest house and enjoy a well deserved rest.

Day 3

After an early breakfast, we head to Misfat Al Abreen, an iconic village that offers panoramic view of the town of Al Hamra, located right across the mountain from Wadi Bani Auf. A quick stop there and we head up the highest mountain in Oman, Jebel Shams. After a picnic lunch overlooking the ‘Grand Canyon’ of Oman, we commence our hike along the edge of the canyon, the famous Balcony Walk, to the recently abandoned village of Sap Bani Khamis where we have a quick stop for photos and a look at a lake above. We then continue climbing up the scree to the start of the villagers’ old sticks stairway, now the Via Ferrata. The route is protected with a steel cable that reaches all the way up the 200m cliffs, providing assisted climbing for the adventurer with little experience. With the 2,000m deep canyon just over your shoulder, the views are exceptional and a head for heights is most definitely required. This adventure is not for the faint hearted! Spend the night at 2,000m at one of the local hotels.
